My Experience with Meditation
In this crazy world we live in, it’s almost impossible to find peace or time to quiet the mind. Our brains are constantly being overstimulated with cell phones, computers, tv screens, negative environment etc. Even upon bedtime it can still be a challenge quieting the mind and to fully embrace being in the present moment. What if I told you that meditation can help set the tone for your day/night and can help improve your daily life and vitality? All you need is 5 minutes of meditation a day to give back to your mind, body and soul.
Meditation opens the door to our soul’s infinite peace and helps us see our true potential. When we find peace and happiness we learn how to solve daily issues effectively. Inside each of us lies something greater and peaceful than we can ever imagine. Since ancient eras, there have been beings who have learned the wonderful art of meditation and helped others find the way to enlightenment, also called Self-realization or God-realization.
Today I will speak about the benefits of Meditation, my struggles, and the importance of finding a peaceful area in your home for this practice.
Why should we meditate?
We meditate because we live in a world that is constantly ON. Whether we are tending to our children, commuting to work, or dealing with stressful work environments; finding a few minutes of peace is crucial for the well-being of your mental and physical state. When we ignore our need for inner peace, the accumulation of anxiety, worry and frustration can take its toll and or lead to depression, illnesses, amongst other things.
It is only through meditation that we can find the peace that our soul desperately craves for. Meditating for even just 5 minutes in the morning can make a difference and shape your day for the better. When we have a meditation of the highest order, we then can get abiding peace, light and delight.
My experience with meditation
I’ve known the importance of meditation for years but still struggle with it on a daily basis. Quieting my overactive mind hasn’t been easy; especially being a single mom of twins and the demanding pressures at work.
Things that happen when Maria meditates:
1. My back starts to hurt 2. My breathing feels too premeditated 3. I’m bombarded with thoughts 4. A song gets stuck in my head 5. I start getting the itchies 6. I think too much on what to expect during meditation 7. I become impatient and I QUIT
I decided to take a class about a year ago that covered the ABC’s of meditation, including posture, breathing and concentration techniques. The class also gave us advice on creating your own meditation space at home and setting up a daily meditation routine.
I wanted so bad to create a meditation space in my home but space was very limited. I found an area in my living room. I then bought a Zabuton Meditation Cushion with a Yoga Pillow from Amazon.com. It was a bit pricey but there are many cushions to choose from that are less expensive. I decorated my area accordingly and I was finally ready to meditate. At first I was very relaxed, until my cat started invading my space. Once he left I began to meditate again and for some reason I felt like I was being stared at. I opened my eyes and there was Kobe a foot away just staring at me. There are many people that meditate with their animals and that’s totally cool but I am not one of them. I prefer to meditate alone in peace. Another issue I had was that Kobe decided that my meditation cushion would be his new bed. I would come home to find it full of cat hair. I then had to cover the area and put things on it so he wouldn’t get on. Long story short, my supposed area of peace was not working out for me.
My only other option was to find space in my tiny room. There’s an area behind my door that looked hopeful. The only con was that I had bins and a hamper in that corner. Yesterday I decided to clean house, make room in my closet for those bins and to get the corner meditation-ready.
Getting my area ready
My space after completion 🙂
Voila!
After my space was completed I saged the area to clear the energies and to give the space a new feel. My meditation that night wasn’t 100% successful, but I felt more relaxed, less distracted and with practice I know I will get better at this.
For those having the same issues with meditation and limited space, my advice to you is to find a little space that will be just for your meditation. All you need is a corner and a comfortable pillow to sit on that will help with your posture. Make this area yours! Focus on relaxation and breathing. Be patient and don’t give up, practice makes perfect. Thoughts will enter your mind, just accept them and let them go and continue on with your meditation. I’ve read that the best time of day to meditate is at 3am because it is the stillest time of the day. For people who cannot do that then anytime should suffice. I meditate before going to bed, it’s the only time I can fit it in. 20-30 minutes is all you need. The better you get, the longer you’ll be able to go.
I want to wish you all luck with your meditations. And I wish myself luck as well.
Love and Light,
